Environmental efficiency

The major impact of our operation on the environment is the huge consumption of papers in the conduct of its business. To minimize this impact, various measures have been introduced over the years:

  • Reducing paper consumption through the introduction of electronic systems;
  • Replacing paper products by CD-ROMs, e.g. Street Index and NT Lot/Address Cross Reference Table;

  • Economizing through wider use of the LAN and GOA systems for the purposes of communication and information storage;

Overall consumption is driven in large measure by public demand for records provided by the department. During 2004/05, as activity in the property market increased, paper consumption also increased. The extensive testing programme for IRIS also contributed an exceptional increase. We expect that consumption will start to decline again as customers make greater use of the electronic delivery services available under IRIS.

We also seek to reduce our consumption of energy and other resources through:

  • energy-efficient retrofits and management control measures; and
  • observing green housekeeping rules and following good environmental practices, such as encouraging the use of staircases instead of the lifts, to reuse, reduce and recycle, and to switch off lights and electrical appliances when not in use.

These measures have enabled us to achieve a 5% reduction in electricity consumption for our QGO offices.
